It's all here: skittering samples, snapping drum
loops and digitized cut-ups -- requisite inventory items
in the world of IDM. Unfortunately, without a whole
lotta creativity, these very same elements ultimately
render much of Mochipet's tracks mere novelties. I won't
deny quirky remixes of Radiohead ("Morning Bell") and Wu
Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard ("Shimmy Shimmy Ya") are
entertaining at present, but I wonder what sort of
impact these tracks will have in a year's time. Fans of
agit-electro in the vein of I Care Because You
Do-era Aphex Twin and his Warp Records kin may find
redeeming moments, but frankly, this CD lacks the
intelligence and the complexity that makes much of those
albums so vital. As far as free albums go -- that's
right: visit the website, fill out the form, and
Mochipet promises a copy will be mailed right away --
this one is worth the price of admission -- a little too
close for comfort with regards to Mochipet's obvious
influences, but certainly worth the trouble of asking
for a freebie. Sign up now. -- Mike
